RECOLLECTIONS EN ROUTE: WHERE TO FIND THE BEST PIZZA IN THE WORLD

“Authentic Italian food is unlike anything you’ll ever taste”, they said. “Once you have mozzarella in Italy, you’ll never be the same”, they said. “Italy is home to the best pizza in the world“, they said. Were they right?

At this point, you are aware that my favorite village in Cinque Terre was hands down Riomaggiore. And if you aren’t aware, you can catch up here. Riomaggiore is stunning, relatively inexpensive {in comparison to the other villages}, charming, and has the best pizza in the world.

That’s right my friends, I’ve said it.

When I visited Cinque Terre, I was traveling with my then-boyfriend. The first night we stayed in Riomaggiore, I was determined to grab some food {and wine obviously}, and watch the sunset. At the bottom of the seaside village on the cliff, we found a plethora of rocks that lead out into the ocean. During the afternoon, this is a great place for a swim, but in the evening it’s the perfect location to unwind.

Having scouted the best place to watch the sunset, the next task was {of course} food. Riomaggiore has a limited amount of restaurants compared to Monterosso or Vernazza, but honestly I was happy with each and every one of them. We both decided pizza was an obvious choice to accompany our wine that evening. We accidentally stumbled upon K&Pris on our way to the rocks.

But thank god we did.

This place is a hole in the wall, counter-service, restaurant. It’s close to the train station and can be easy to miss. That being said, there are usually people waiting  for their orders outside so keep a look out for them. We decided to order a pizza each, because… I mean, do we really need an excuse? One would never be enough.

To be honest, I don’t actually remember which one of us ordered the ‘best pizza in the world’ that night. I would like to believe it was a collaborative effort in deciding which pizza’s to eat, but that’s always up for debate. Regardless, one of the two pizza’s we ordered that night consisted of prosciutto, basil, tomatoes, and mascarpone {key ingredient here, folks}.

We made our way down to the rocks with our pizza and wine in hand, and immediately were stunned when we took a bite. I can’t even begin to explain how incredible this pizza tasted. Our second pizza had no chance that evening. Watching the sunset on the rocks that night was one of the most magical moments of my life.

I still look back on it and dream of the day that I can return to the seaside village in order to recreate it.

It was so special in fact, that we did recreate it each night after that to the point it became a routine. The only difference – we ordered two of the mascarpone pizza’s each night instead of pretending any other combination would suffice. I might have gained a couple pounds over a few nights, but it was well worth it.

I have yet to taste a pizza that even comes close in comparison. Seriously, I cannot recommend this place enough! It wasn’t until I began drafting this blog post that I realized K&Pris is rated the #1 restaurant in Riomaggiore on Trip Advisor. Therefore, you don’t even need to take my word for it. There are plenty of others out there that share my opinion that this pizza is the best in Italy {and therefore in the world – because that’s my logic}.

Over to you, what is the best pizza you’ve ever tasted? Where did you find it? Have you ever been to K&Pris?

  1. Ahhh…the ambiance may have seduced your taste buds….Si??? The best pizza I’ve ever had (so far) is from Pernicano’s in Scripps Ranch (not to far from where your brother went to college). It’s their own special ‘Margarita Pizza’…made as only a Pernicano can…;-) While attending football games at Mission Bay High, Pernicano’s in La Jolla was the after game hang out. Of course that was in the early 1960’s and ‘Margarita Pizza’ was yet to become a reality. Cousin Susan 😉
