NEW YEAR, NEW YORK

What brings you to New York?

This is the question asked in every single interview I’ve been invited to this week. And one of the easiest questions to answer. I have always {and I mean always} wanted to move to New York. I have had multiple opportunities, however, something has always pulled me in a different direction. I cannot complain about this as it brought me to New Zealand multiple times, and my favorite city in the world, London.

But suddenly, I found myself back at home in California, sitting on my ass watching Netflix, and scarfing down Hot Cheetos. I realized it was time. Time to make my dreams of moving to the big apple come true. I had no obligations, no employment opportunities, and no more excuses. It was time.

I decided I was going to make the move. Then I changed my mind. Then I changed my mind again. Then I changed my mind again… {you get it}

I’ll be honest. I was intimidated. To say the least.

I’ve heard the horror stories. New York is a beast in it’s own nature. But regardless, I purchased a one way ticket and flew out on the red-eye last weekend {thanks for the push, Mom!}. All I need now is a job, an apartment, and a backbone. Then we can call it official.

I can’t take full credit for this move though. This couldn’t have happened without my family. All the generosity, encouragement, and networking they have provided me with has enabled me to finally move to the East Coast. I mean, I am temporarily living in my Aunt’s cozy, sophisticated Upper East Side apartment just blocks away from Central Park and the MET. Yes, I feel like a character in Gossip Girl. Yes, I have been re-binge-watching Gossip Girl episodes all week. Yes, I have sat on the MET steps {for 0.3 seconds as it was snowing} pretending to be Blair Waldorf. But more on that later.

I’m falling for Manhattan. And falling fast. Even in below freezing temperatures I can appreciate the things this city has to offer. Let’s talk updates shall we?

My interviews this week have led me from the financial district, to Midtown, and even to Brooklyn. I have taken approximately 14 Subway rides, and walked multiple blocks, eventually finding myself in the middle of Times Square {on accident?…what?}. I am saving the sight seeing for the weekends where I can walk across Brooklyn Bridge, marvel at the Empire State Building, and wish Lady Liberty a Happy New Year.

It has been a year since my last adventures in a new city. And I can easily say that they both have one thing in common. THE COLD. It feels like de ja vu complaining about the bone chilling Winter weather like I did over, and over again in London.

But guys, New York takes it to the next level. I happened to arrive during the coldest week of Winter thus far {according to local sources}. The temperature peaked at 15 degrees fahrenheit on the morning I landed. That is -9 degrees celsius. Holy baby Jesus.

I can’t say I was in great company in Central Park. Most residents were most likely huddled up indoors, with a fire blazing, and a warm cup of tea in hand. But I couldn’t resist at least a visit to Central Park within the first few hours of flying into JFK. It was a short, but sweet, sweet visit.

Snow covered the ground, clung on to tree branches, and got stuck in my {snow} shoes. I have never lived in the snow. But I am fully embracing it.

I need a change. I new pace. A fresh start. And nothing says fresh like newly fallen snow.

So, I’ll continue to live a life of luxury {for now}. And embrace everything this city has to offer. Job searching, apartment hunting, and being a complete tourist will have to wait. At least for the next five minutes. Then it’s right back to business.

I’m excited to share my adventure with you all.

The energy in this city is undeniable. The possibilities, endless.

It’s a New Year. And a new opportunity to make a life for myself here on the East Coast. I will undoubtedly share every moment on the blog. Stay tuned!
