After our short time in Kuta and Uluwatu, it was time to head to the cultural capital of Bali. We hired a driver for the day {about $50 USD} and he quickly became our tour guide. It is much cheaper to hire a driver for a day in Bali for 10 hours, then to pay a taxi driver to drop you from point A to B. With a hired driver you can see point A, B, C, D, E and learn a little something along the way. And it ends up being cheaper in the long run!
The first unexpected stop on our way to Uluwatu was to try Luwak coffee.
Now, looking at the picture above you would assume these ‘coffee beans’ look somewhat normal.
You would be very wrong.
Luwak coffee is created by using coffee ‘berries’ that have once been eaten and excreted by a native cat-like animal called the Asian Palm Civet.
This means these cats {which look nothing like cats by the way} eat the berries, digest them where they are then fermented, and poop them out. They are then cleaned twice, with the skins being removed each time. These are then used as like normal coffee beans.
^ ta-da! i give you the magic beans…
Obviously I was extremely skeptical about this entire process, BUT when in Bali…
I gave it a shot and tasted my very first cat-poo-chino!
And guys, it wasn’t that bad.
Luwak coffee is the rarest and most expensive coffee in the entire world. It has been known to retail in price for almost $100 a cup internationally. And we were able to enjoy a cup for a measly $5. If you are even in Indonesia it is a must!
^ they offer a wishing well after drinking cat-poo-chinos, probably to allow you to wish for good health and a decent immune system that day
^ when you realize you just drank cat poop but are still the most romantic mother effers there ever were so you don’t mind a big ol’ kiss afterwards #romanceatitsfinest
Love love love! I can’t wait to hear more about Bali – it is on my bucket list!!
