Recollections En Route: Brač, Croatia

^ Image Soure

Disclaimer: I have no idea who took the photo above, but it was not myself. Surprisingly, I don’t own my own private helicopter to capture the fabulous overhead shots of every island I visited in Croatia {spoiler alert: there were soooooo many}! But, regardless, I have no idea how to properly give credit to whoever took the photo, so I did my best to link the website to the ‘Image Source’.

Brač was my favorite island in Croatia. *gasp* I said it. And I only spent a matter of hours there. I believe it was a combination of the fact that it was so close to Split {another favorite location as stated previously} and that it was like stepping into a dream. Or a Hollywood movie set.

Everything about the port town we entered seemed magical. The people were gorgeous, the scenery was stunning, and the energy was cool, calm, and collected.

Then you take a bus to Bol.

And you are presented with the most crystal clear, strikingly blue water you’ve ever seen.

From the bus stop in Bol, you can easily walk to the famous beach in about 20 minutes. Don’t pay for the mini-train thing. The walk is worth it! Trust me.

Once on the beach you can treat yourself to the ever so popular gelato OR a fruit smoothie instead. I favored the smoothie and was not disappointed when they created it right in front of me with fresh fruit and yogurt.

The beach is crowded, but surprisingly comfortable to spend an afternoon on. It isn’t loud or full of obnoxious foreigners {though look and you shall find if you try hard enough}. It was quite peaceful and serene, even if my pictures are deceiving.

But guys, the water is cold. I am talking ice bath cold. Colder than any fresh water lake I have comfortably immersed myself in. It was freezing.

But look how warm it looks.

Again, deceitful photography.

Shockingly enough, although you could assume it is fresh water you find yourself in, it is some of the saltiest water in the world. Like in the Dead Sea, you can easily float on top of the surface without moving your arms or legs. Pretty remarkable stuff.

It may just be ‘another port town’, but it’s a special one. It’s easily accessible from Split. We took a morning ferry across the sea which was enjoyable in itself. You can purchase your tickets the morning of or in advance. Once in Brač, you can then buy a bus ticket to make the short ride across the island to Bol.

I did not get to explore the entire island of Brač, however I did find it difficult to locate a restaurant. That sounds insane, I realize.

But you will find in Croatia that many outdoor ‘what-look-like-a-restaurant spots’, are actually just outdoor cafés. These offer coffee, tea, and the like, but no food. Oh wait, they do serve gelato, a staple in many European’s diet. Just be wary of your options.

I’m sad to even finish this post because it means my time on this little island is truly complete. I’ve been holding on to the pictures of this paradise in hopes that I would magically return somehow. But alas, it just gives me an excuse to return later on in life, and share the magic with someone else.

My love for Croatia will always point back to the island of Brač.

I cannot suggest it enough for anyone traveling to Croatia {more specifically Split}, as it will truly take your breath away.

Next, Sailing Croatia!
